About Me ... (share your hobbies, interests, favorite things, music, movies, etc.)
I was born an animal lover and believe life is truly richer when animals are a part of our family! My beloved beagle, Maggie Mae, picked me one day when she was just 8 weeks old, and my life was never the same again. As a single girl and her dog, we enjoyed many great adventures, and she consoled me through some of the most difficult days. When I married 13 years later, she lovingly welcomed our Dave into the family. At 4.5 years of age, Maggie was diagnosed with Epilepsy. At 6, she had neurosurgery to repair a ruptured disc, at about 12 a thyroid condition, and at 13, she went into kidney failure. She loved unconditionally and just a couple weeks before her 15th birthday, Dave and I were by her side as she took her last breath. And my heart broke.

With a devastating loss and a heavy heart, I wondered how I could honor her life and the joyful good that she brought to all she met. My eyes were opened to the terrible problem we have with abandoned and unwanted pets who deserve the kind of life that Maggie lived. So, armed with my Marketing Communications expertise and desire to make a difference, my goal in creating PawsitivelyTexas.com is to join you in the work you do and fueled by our shared passion, we'll mobilize statewide for a stronger voice in assuring a pawsitive change for the animals we love so much! To the Rescue Groups and Shelter Volunteers, you are my top heroes!

When I lost Maggie in November, I was not sure I could ever have another dog again, the pain was so great. But then I realized there are so many wonderful animals in need of good homes. We were picked by a Rescue Group for a popular little rescue terrier mix; such a tiny dog needed a big name and we re-Christened her Bella McKenzie – we call her McKenzie, but she also responds to Yoda and Little Dog. It was not long before I missed the wonderful personality of a Beagle and we discovered one about a year old at our City Shelter in need of a home. I was first in line the day she came up for adoption and we renamed her Gracie Rae; but she also responds to Yoga (you should see her downward dog pose!), Big Dog, and GraceGrace. Nothing like two young, boisterous dogs, not yet potty-trained to liven up our home. Yeah, it's full of love here! But I'm still working on Dave for more "kids" ... =)

You can see my Tribute to Maggie by clicking this link. I love her so much and will always miss her terribly!

Here are our two new adorable girls, Gracie Rae and Bella Mckenzie!

Canine Flu Alert

Both the Texas Veterinary Association and Texas news affiliates are reporting a caution of Canine Flu!

The Texas Veterinary reports that canine flu is not transferable to people, cats, or other animals, but is highly contagious among dogs.

The DFW news affiliate reports that cases have been confirmed in Texas (primarily Houston, and a couple in the North Texas area).

The Arlington city shelter is offering flu vaccinations each Sunday in September for $15 each. If you know of any other… Continue

I am no longer at Saginaw.. Things were going fantastic, then they started to kill more for no reason when we had lost of space.. I was so mad I lef and so did all of the other volunteers as well.... Then went to Everman Shelter, and posted for them... Things got really really bad there. The ACO got fired.. They were killing, stealing.. Anything you can think of.. I left there right before all this happened. .I could see it coming....After I had worked for months to get 2 of the dogs out who had been there for a year and completely ignored.. I almost had them placed in a sanctuary, when they killed the two of them out the blue.... That was really hard.. I have seen so much in the shelters here and just can't handle what goes on in any of them..

Now, I am just doing independent rescue on my own.. I have 3 in foster that were on the eu list from different shelters.. For now, this is what I am choosing to do.. I just cannot handle the mentality of the shelter world.. It is perfectly ok for them to kill kill and kill again.. They honestly think nothing of it.. Sooooooooooo that's my update... = )

Hello Alva! I am Kevin Glowski. I really love your site and what you are doing for the animals. I am one of the Assistant Organizers of the San Antonio Big Dawgs and the brain behind most of the crazy events we do. The organizer and I would like to welcome you to the Big Dawgs and thank you for adding our event to your site. If you have promo material you would like us to get out for you we would be happy to give them away in a doggy bag at one of our events. I always try to do Pet Friendly Family Fun Events. Once again thank you and welcome to the Big Dawgs. You are one awesome lady!

I wanted to let you know that our chapter in Lubbock texas also offers pet first aid. People can take either the cat first aid or the dog first aid, I of course took both. We use pet manikins here that actually have the lungs so the client gets the feel of how to do cpr on a pet. Its a really worthwhile course if you can find it.

Hi Alva, Thanks for sending the info. Today was my first day to this site, my friend sent me the link and I find it to be the most exciting site I have been to in a long long while. I am an animal lover and have been since I was a small child, always rescuing something or other. My friend knows I am looking to adopt a pomeranian puppy, so she has keep me in the loop, and I have to say, I love this website. Thank you for letting me be a part of it. How do I change my name so my whole name is not out there for the world to see. I also work with the Red Cross and we also are concerned for pets in disasters, so I have had a lot of training in that area as well. I am the Director of Emergency Services here at our chapter.
