I need help! Trying ot potty train a Kennel dog...

Hello anyone out there,

I just adopted a rescue dog, from a Kennel. To my knowledge this sheltie has lived in a cage, been used to have litters of puppies to sell to a pet store, and has had no training at all. She just gave birth I was told about a month ago. She has not been spayed, and she does not know what to do outside. My other sheltie is very good about going outside, but to date this little girl will not go potty outside. She has urinated and pooped on my carpet at least three times, she tried eating her poop once, and when my husband tried to stop her and put her outside she bit him.

I need help fast. He is ready to get rid of her and has lost all patience. We have only had her a week, and I work everyday. So being here during the day is difficult. I have spring break off next week, so I will be here everyday for 9 days. Does anyone out there know what I can do to train her to go to the bathroom outside in the morning before work and in the afternoons, when she is let outside to go? Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Marilyn,
Was she a puppy mill rescue? They often have not been very socialized and need time and patience to help them acclimate to a loving home.

This link has good info; see if your husband will read it also to help him understand her challenges:

If you don't currently crate her, you might consider it while you're away; we've crate-trained all our dogs and they like the crate, often going there during the day for a nap. They're den animals and as long as they don't associate the crate with punishment, they tend to like them. By crating her during the day, you minimize the risk she will soil something while you are gone. She will need time to acclimate to love.

We have three rescues; two both came with issues. It does take time to help them work through it, at times you may not feel like it will ever get better, then one day you start to see change and it's all worth it!

I also posted your inquiry on our Facebook page, so you may see some other replies there too:

Good luck and please keep us posted. We hope and pray the best for your girl!
